About Us
Bay Search and Rescue is and independent, voluntary, flood snow and quicksand rescue service based in Flookburgh on the coast of Morecambe bay. Our team of volunteers are on call 24/7 365 days of the year. We were initially started after an incident in 1999 involving all the emergency services working together to release a man trapped for 10hours in quicksand in Morecambe bay. The rescuers had walk to reach the man not only carrying all the equipment required but also having to negotiate the dangerous sands themselves. Our founders, who were on this incident, decided to look at safer ways to transfer the equipment and personnel across the sand, and purchased and ex racing hovercraft to do the job.
The charity has evolved over the last 20 years and whilst we don't use a hovercraft anymore we do have a fleet of specialist vehicles that are able to cross the treacherous sands of Morecambe bay and other areas of the UK.
The teams specialist skills and equipment are used to support all the statutory emergency services in a number of incidents across the country. We are DEFRA registered meaning we are able to support in flood situations anywhere across the UK. We also use our Hagglund ATV to support he fire services in moorland fire incidents.
We are predominantly funded by our 2 charity shops in Grange over Sands and Milnthorpe.
